Firefox Quantum 60.0.1 repeated download failures

It downloads a little of a 200MB+ file, then cancels by itself then tries again and cancels again only after a tiny bit of download. When trying Save Video As, it will still pause by itself every several seconds or so, but it will automatically resume at the same progress where Save Page As would try again from zero each time. Same problem with or without antivirus or add-on plugins.

What's the real solution? This is extremely frustrating where an older version of Firefox would do the job fine on one attempt.

I tried going to about:config to increase max cache size but it didn't seem to save since I noticed when I tried to set it back to original it was already set to the original value.

None of the years old Firefox help suggestions helped at all. I'm wondering if the source being https has anything to do with it.

Maybe it's a specific host issue ?

Did you try other sites /files ? Or does it occur with everything?

Were you able to download the exact same file with another browser (or older firefox) , or download program ?

The problem is on a new computer with Firefox Quantum 60.0.1 fresh install. As far as I know, the Firefox settings on the old computer and new computer are the same: disabled cookies and javascript, except the new Firefox doesn't let you change the cache size in the normal interface, but I think I did it in about:config.

It's not a host issue if I don't have the same problem on the old computer using old Firefox.

As I noted, Save Movie As behaves more successfully than Save Page As.

The help suggestions suggested possible problem with folder, which is ridiculous, and to reset how Firefox handles the file extension. I don't get how any of this would be a problem on new Firefox but not old Firefox.

Not sure if relevant, but initial attempts to go to https websites often say cannot connect then connect on second try.

open a command prompt and type ip config/flushdns then try connecting to the internet & downloading your file.

Same problem after cmd prompt ipconfig /flushdns.

I've seen many similar reports on this same problem and cannot believe it's still a problem.

Which OS? Which anti virus?

Have you tried FF in safemode? (with all extensions disabled)

Windows 10.

Firefox in safe mode with all add-ons disabled: same problem.

Firefox whitelisted and in firewall exception in antivirus: same problem. Antivirus off: same problem.

Not knowing anything, my pure guess is it has something to do with the source being https and the download being consisting of multiple .part files and maybe the browser is checking certificates or phishing/malware reputation status for each .part segment so it pauses every several seconds. I found an old support post suggesting the crazy frequent pausing has to do with reputation checks.

I'm certain the problem is related to https because http downloads work without interruption and problem exists using Edge browser as well as Firefox.

This may have solved the problem. The Firefox downloads still pause several times, but the auto-resume doesn't start from zero each time and it eventually continues to completion.

Seems like a Firefox and antivirus SSL problem causing downloads to fail repeatedly on Windows 10, but older Firefox on older computer with same antivirus doesn't have problems.

^ EDIT: Nevermind. Still failing downloads. Changed Firefox certificate setting to "select one automatically" and had a successful download.

I may have solved the problem. The problem was Firefox or Edge in Windows 10 consistently failing to download files where in very short intervals Task Manager would indicate no ethernet connection. Extremely frustrating. It had nothing to do with anti-virus.

To solve the problem, go to Device Manager, look for the tab with something like a checkbox for allowing the computer to turn off the network to save power and uncheck that. Go to the Advanced tab and look for something for energy efficient ethernet and disable that.
