After clicking encode (avi to dvdmpeg2) I hear the DING! and get a finished text in the progress window but there is no file to be found. I've tried saving to 3 different locations, nothing. It's odd. What simple point am I missing here?

    Thanks

Please let us read the Process Information log about this conversion. You may access this log by clicking the blue "i" in the ffmpegX Progress window (after a conversion, or attempt).

The first line of the log seems to say it all: It can't find mpeg2enc. You need to (re)install it.

And don't forget: If it comes as a zipped (or otherwise compressed) file, you need to unzip it first, and then finish the install.

I guess my mencoder and mplayer installation was wrong (unzip duh). Another problem popped to make me extra confused. I'll make another thread for that. (real/rmvb issues).

    Thanks

Perhaps that too, but the error is very clear about missing mpeg2enc, the third binary. Use the 'Install binaries' item in the ffmpegX menu to get the installer window back again. Or re-launch the app, which will do a check for the binaries and prompt the installer window if it finds something obviously wrong.

Hi, I am having the same problem (encode - more often than not - but not always) does not encode, just 'Dings' straight away. I have been encoding from vob to mpeg 4 or DV - it has worked many times but frequently it doesn't and I don't know what determines whether it works or not. It seems to have stopped encoding anything now though! Any suggestions?? Thank you!
    This is the info log:

I have the same problem which just started today. I've been using ffmpegX for several years now, but suddenly, when I try to convert an avi file to DVDmpeg2enc, then use Filters to add a subtitle srt file (VOB Subtitles, Text encoding: ISO-8859-1, font size 2, Pos 95), it instantly dings. When I try to preview the video, I get the following message with no mplayer video preview:
sh: -c: line 0: unexpected EOF while looking for matching `"
sh: -c: line 1: syntax error: unexpected end of file

This even happens when I try to convert a file that I previously successfully converted to a Video TS file.

The process information from ffmpegx Progress reads:
/bin/sh: -c: line 6: unexpected EOF while looking for matching `"'
/bin/sh: -c: line 7: syntax error: unexpected end of file

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You would get this error if there is an apostrophe (') or quote symbol (") in the file name or one of its parent folder names, or in the volume/disk name. Change the name, and it should work again.

Wow, thanks for the quick reply! You're right--I put the files in a folder that had an apostrophe (A Man's Story) and then none of the files worked. I'll give it a try and see if I can encode this time.

Yes, it worked! Another note to self: don't use apostrophes! Thank you for the quick and helpful reply.

I am having the same problem... press "encode" then dings, but doesn't save. Here is what it says when I press the 'i' button:

Encoding started on Sun May 31 12:04:48 PDT 2009

Unknown option on the command line: -oac

sounds like it has something to do with the "Unknown option on the command line: -oac." I'm not very good with computers, just trying to get some of my camcorder footage to post on youtube. In this, can you please computer talk to me like a 2 year old, thanks!!!!

I would have expected a line like:
    MEncoder dev-CVS-051126-18:35-3.3 (C) 2000-2005 MPlayer Team
that is, "MEncoder" instead of "MPlayer".
Is it possible that you switched these two binaries in the installer window?

Please tell us which settings you used to get this error, so that we may try to replicate it on our side.

-oac is the "output audio codec" option
which will not be understood by a player, but is a needed parameter for an encoder. The "Unknown option" would happen if your mencoder binary was switched for mplayer.

    --
Go to the menu bar at the top of the screen, where it says "ffmpegX". From the pull down menu, select "Install binaries" to bring the installer window back. Set the checkboxes. Locate the binaries again, in proper order. Install.
    Try encoding again.

Awesome, thanks for replying Case. So I reinstalled MEncoder (I think that was the one at least), then got it to save to a .avi. Then I opened the .avi and played it in quicktime and it was all black, and the video lasted a couple of minutes. When I clicked on the 'i' it had a lot of stuff to say:

QuickTime may need some help reading this format. Please install Perian to let QuickTime read many more media formats and codecs.

It seems you are converting from a VIDEO_TS folder? This DVD had two titles. Perhaps the default Title 1 is 0:04:08 and isn't the one you intended to convert. Perhaps Title 2 is the main feature you were trying to make into AVI. You may change the DVD title number to convert in the bottom-right section of the Video tab.

This part of the log is typical of a successful conversion: a summary of the output video and audio.

that totally worked! The only thing I may want to change is the resolution, wish it was more crispy-clear. Is there any way to get a higher resolution on the .avi file?

I' having a similar problem. I'm converting MOD files to MPG. I hear the "zing" but find no file. I also don't have audio when I click on the "preview" tab in ffmepgX 0.0.9. Here's the "info" message I receive after encoding:
Encoding started on Mon Jun 1 11:37:52 PDT 2009

Like another person above, I'm almost clueless about video files, so please respond in simple terms. What am I doing wrong? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Only some of the crispy-clear is lost in the output resolution. There is also a bit of quality loss every time you convert video.

In the video tab, under Video parameters is the output Video size. Width and height of video works a bit different for DVD versus AVI (pixel aspect ratio), so simply copying numbers to match the source file (720 x 480) would give an unwanted stretched picture.
You may change those target video size parameters to 848 x 480 (upscaling with original height), or 720 x 400 (original width). Most people seem to prefer the latter over the first, as the first will look a bit soft because of the upscaling, and the file would be 40% bigger for being just 20% better in resolution.

Case, you've been huge . I'm going to try both, the 848 X 480, and the 720 X 400, see which I like best. You'll have to check out some of my vids when I finally get them posted, maybe in a week or something, http://www.youtube.com/sunnysaunter

See? Source video is MPEG-2, audio is AC3, just like with .MPG files.

Check the target framerate in the Video tab. ffmpegX may have misinterpreted the source file and defaulted to a weird number (0 or 1000 or ...). If it is "29.97" then the error message is mistaken, as 29.97 fps is a good number for mpeg-2 framerate.
