    so i have an old device here that is 3.5" screen 320x240 it only supports mpeg1 .mpg @ 352x288 max rez
    tested download some old mpg music videos from videopimp and they look great on this device

    so what i need is a free portable app that could convert video to .mpg and keep it 4:3 aspect or keep it 4:3 letterboxed if widescreen

    thanks

    Something like Vidcoder, trouble is there may be caveats. The old Tmpgenc was somewhat unique in that it took care of everything.
    Depending on the age of your device it may not support H.264 at all

    Please specify the model of this device. Then we can more accurately evaluate the specs and capabilities.

    Well the old Tmpgenc is portable at least;
    I couldn't get it to work on my old Win 7 PC using dshow - until I uninstalled
    LAV filters and put back the old FFDshow/Haali splitter, working now

    I encoded a video with vidcoder to a mpeg2 file and then put this into the old tmpg and it only encoded the first frame only with all the sound.

    I had forgotten Vidcoder included the mpeg-2 encoder. I created a file with mpeg-2/mp3 in mkv.
    Worked OK in the Tmpgenc 2.5 using dshow as the decoder encoded to VCD spec mpeg-1
