...as seems to be the case in most circs, when any future DVD player plays it back and restores the picture to its original 16:9, is there "quality loss'? I mean, will this "restored" 16:9 look worse than the footage would've looked had it been copied to, say, a DVD-R and retained its original 16:9 aspect ratio?
PS It's the DMR-DWT720 model btw.

  2. PAL DVD recorders record at 720:576 (5:4) or less (352x576 or 352x288, depending on recording speed). So neither 4:3 nor 16:9 content is ever recorded at the display aspect ratio.

Whether 720x576 can capture all the resolution of your source depends on the source. Terrestrial and satellite broadcast, whether 4:3 or 16:9, is often at 540x576 or even lower.

Sorry, let me be more precise - widescreen material copied from a camcorder not PAL TV stuff.

  4. What kind of camcorder? You're obviously going to lose resolution if you're talking about a high def camcorder. If it's digital SD it probably uses the same frame size as DVD. If it's analog it probably lower resolution than DVD horizontally.
