Realtek onboard, but it seems like every motherboard I get is horrible with interference on the integrated sound, so I typically use a USB soundcard as my primary sound device. Also can have sound out via HDMI on my graphics card, but not doing that right now.

One has Realtek onboard, the other a Creative Audigy Platinum Pro card with multiple front panel access ports.

  9. Realtek onboard, with HDMI built-in to my video card. However, I only use Realtek onboard, which I love.

For playback internal is ok. For recording, it depends.

I see no reason to go 7.1.

    5.1 covers 95%.

I haven't used a add on sound card in several years. I use S/PDIF out from the motherboard to my surround amp. I think most of my motherboards have the Realtek sound chipset.

I agree with ed on this most of my HTPC use HDMI audio, other workstations use on board audio.

The PC in my make shift recording studio uses M-Audio's Audiophile 2496.
