  1. Apart from FFmpeg and clever FFmpeg GUI, which are both good programs, I'm looking at another video converter.

I have already looked at over a dozen alternative video converters, but they fail to meet my requirements.

    The requirements are -

    >local computer based and NOT online based
    >handle large number of video formats, including less common video formats such as ogv, webm, and so on
    >batch conversion option if needed
    >allow custom resizing if needed
    >allow custom bitrates if needed
    >can be either GUI or CLI, but prefer GUI

EDIT: The video converter should be capable of reading file headers instead of relying on file extensions to determine file type. File extensions are not always correct, and some files don't have extensions at all!

    Suggestions?

I made up a simple ffmpeg based batch scripting based util, keys no mouse. "Transcoder"

local computer based and NOT online based ... yes
handle large number of video formats, including less common video formats such as ogv, webm, and so on ... maybe
batch conversion option if needed ... yes
allow custom resizing if needed ... Resizing .. Fixed values
allow custom bitrates if needed ... fixed selection only
can be either GUI or CLI, but prefer GUI ... only single page interface, no CLI

I use Wondershare HD Video Converter Pro to do conversions. It is a GUI App. It is also a downloader as a bonus.
The only thing I don't like about it is that when I upload a video which has more than one stream, it converts but keeps only one stream. I have to remember to always select the audio streams that I want.

  4. What about HandBrake? It`s a local computer-based application available for Windows, macOS, and Linux, so it doesn't rely on an internet connection for conversion. It supports a wide range of video formats, including popular ones like MP4, MKV, and AVI, as well as less common formats like OGV and WebM.
    No pain - no gain!

Handbrake is (essentially) just a GUI for ffmpeg

    Thanks for your suggestion.

It appears that this program won't allow setting custom values for video sizes and bitrates which is not really suitable in my case. Plus it is based on FFmpeg (which although it is a good program, it is not perfect. There are instances where FFmpeg didn't process files entirely correctly I believe, based on comments made elsewhere on the web).

It is preferred that the video converter use other means of processing without the need of FFmpeg.

I couldn't find "Wondershare HD Video Converter Pro". I did find Wondershare UniConverter which I downloaded and installed for testing.

It seems UniConverter uses FFmpeg as a base for it's conversions which is not really ideal as FFmpeg is not entirely perfect in its' functions under some circumstances, I understand.

Also UniConverter has preset video sizes and preset video bitrates which, again, it not really suitable as I have come across various odd video sizes and odd video bitrates. I would prefer to have user customizable settings for both video size and bitrate.

I have Handbrake, but as lollo pointed out, I believe Handbrake uses FFmpeg as it's engine which is not really ideal as FFmpeg is not completely without errors under some circumstances I believe.

Additionally, Handbrake has very limited video type outputs and does NOT include ogv, webm, and other lesser known video types. So Handbrake is not suitable for my purposes.

No alternatives are completely without errors under some circumstances
