The problem is that the e-ac3 audio doesn't play well with my av amp ("normal" ac3 is fine).
I have AVC Pro, which does a good job of converting the audio, but it downmixes from 5.1 (or even 7.1) to stereo, which is OK but not the BIG sound I was expecting.
Any hints or help (or hand-holding) would be much appreciated.

Use ffmpeg in a CMD shell
ffmpeg -i MKVFile.mkv -vcodec copy -acodec AC3 Converted.mkv
or as a batch job
ffmpeg -i "%1" -vcodec copy -acodec AC3 "%~n1_AC3.mkv"
Maybe place it in your SendTo folder and use it in the right-click menu from Windows File Explorer. -
Hi,
O.K. Avidemux has two AC-3 encoders. AFTEN and LAV. Now AFAIK FFMPEG is using (aften). And I found on web, that (lav) is using ffmpeg. Isnt it bit weird?
So if you are not satisfied with FFMPEG quality or whatever, try AC-3 (lav) It must be different. Otherwise dont know why Avidemux offers it. Altought internet claims as mentioned above.
