  1. How do you clean a video up and increase it's resolution? I've tried 100 things in Handbrake but no matter what I do I can't get higher resolution or better image quality. Is there some tool that is known for making the quality of videos better and for increasing resolution?

Try Vidcoder (uses the Handbrake engine but offers more
flexibility), it can do both of those things

You're assumption that it would achieve the same size as some sort of default behavior
is erroneous. It's all to do with the quality setting in the encoding tab

  6. I set it to HQ 1080p, much larger than what the original was

Understand though that what you get will STILL be the original's amount of detail (maybe slightly less if not using optimal algorithms), just blown up, warts & all. AIl SnakeOil salesmen claims to the contrary, you can't get out more than you started with. And "cleaning it up" is also not without its own compromises.

  9. When I get a low res film I always maximise it in my player anyway so am used to less quality through enlarging. I can live with that. I just done another version even bigger and the file was even smaller still!
I shall have to have a play around with a short film and see if I can figure out how to get the best results.
I've seen some mp4's on torrent sites that are better quality than dvd lol
