I want to convert Video files so I can play them on my TV. Is there a free file converter and if not what would be the best one to buy?
Try StreamFab Downloader and download from Netflix, Amazon, Youtube! Or Try DVDFab and copy Blu-rays! or rip iTunes movies!

The best answer to these types of questions is always, get a standalone Android box of <$50 as it will run rings around the builtin player on your TV. Far better than cutting a square peg into a round hole.
If you insist on playback on your TV directly, list what types of files the media player in your TV will work with and list the types of files (with Media Info reports) you have. The fix could be something as simple as fixing the header to complete reencoding (losing quality and taking time) to a format the media player in your TV will accept. With this, others will be able to suggest the best software to do what you need to do.
