im not sure where you shop either I bought a server with 10 2tb sas drives, 12 cores 64 ecc ram, and a rack for less than $200 usd. 175 to be exact so saying a raid array is out of the reach of a normal consumer is absurd. as to why I need/want this I run 36 instances of a game I play 24/7 plus use it for whatever else I want to use it for such as Minecraft server and other uses. I also bought a workstation with 12 cores, 16gb ecc ram, plus 6 sas hdds for 150 usd. as of right now there is a supermicro with 6 cores and 64 ram for sell at 40 usd so the option is there for raid arrays in the home market. since its there why not use it? you can add that to your thread of pros being cost efficient because of the amounts of hdd space cores and ram for the cost is a lot better than a pc at similar stats (plus its heavy duty).

This is not a joke, tell me where got this deal, I have been looking for a low cost used server/workstation, had found an older SB based 12 core 24 thread server with 32GB of ram for $300, but that $175 sounds very appealing.

    Post a link please.

  3. I'd like to add one thing, while there may technically be 4k content available, from streaming sites, sports, non-porn and porn, the reality is that because of the way the content is prepared you rarely end up with a final product that has appreciably more detail than a lower rez version.

First you have directors that shoot with a soft focus, producers and colorists that grade scenes for various artistic effects, and then you have the compressionists that low pass filter nearly all content meant for delivery to end users, by the time we get the "4k content, it's been cropped, downsized, put through the processing mill, upscaled to create the master then encoded to various delivery formats in bit rate constrained scenarios and then we view it.

Most of the stuff, to me, ends up looking no better than a properly done 1080p product.

At first read, I thought you got a great deal. After thinking about it and crunching some numbers, not so much. Even if you're running RAID 1, you have 10TB of storage. For your $175, you can get a 12 WD Easystore (the 14TB Easystore was $200 a month ago) and decase it to get a Red NAS drive.

But you get SAS drives and an enclosure! Okay, but unless you have a direct connection to the buyer on a server farm, you got used products that are considered end of life, which is why it it was so cheap. I'm curious about the power on drive hours of your drives.

I can't put what you have as a Pro because you need to have at least one (ideally more) 2TB SAS drive as a spare if/when one in the array fails. Plus you still need regular backup drive(s) + another drive(s) as a backup drive to mirror what you have if you need to do a full rebuild.

As I said above. Your situation and usage is not what I'd consider typical home usage (neither is my situation), which I loosely define as someone with low enough storage needs, say ~8-12TB, that a single drive + backup could easily handle for less than even a RAID 1 setup (which IMO is really walking on a thin tightrope).

Edit: Buying professional level equipment doesn't make you or your setup professional, but it's not definitely not average home use level either. Hope that your posts doesn't encourage a lot of people to go your route because supply and demand will drive prices up!

Don't know how we got here talking abut 4K, but it's fine with me!

I agree with your final sentence, but your general statement. But AFAIK, there's no colorist or compressionist for sports and TV productions. There may be come color correction in video productions, but I don't believe they employ a colorist. And sports are straight from the camera to the broadcaster, though there is compression for during the data transfer.

Just adding my $0.02 to keep readers from thinking their home videos require the same treatment as theatrical releases.

Soph where are you located? Just a general idea of where. Craigslist and ebay both have servers.

  7. Yeah, but after the Jackson ripped shirt incident during superbowl, there's now a time delay and a lovely "oh shit!" monitor who has the dull job of watching like a hawk waiting to press the censor button....

    ...

4k - if people here aren't ripping discs for home media servers, they're filming home videos, etc most likely, right? All my friends with iPhones stuff their 256GB phones full with dig, baby, travel photos and videos, so gotta have a big backup storage at home to store all that over the years. Home RAID/NAS/BACKUP is why TBs get filled fast.

    “In the beginning there was nipple”, to quote this excellent retrospective article on the subject. {*}
Quote : “So for Powell, the halftime show represents "the last great moment" of a TV broadcast becoming a national controversy — the last primal scream of a public marching inexorably toward a new digital existence: "It might have been essentially the last gasp. Maybe that was why there was so much energy around it. The Internet was coming into being, it was intensifying. People wanted one last stand at the wall. It was going to break anyway. I think it broke.””

I can only imagine the suffering of the dull dude waiting for years for anything to happen that could justify his very job, his very existence... until one night he snaps and censors the weatherman, just because.
“You've been hungry. You've been horny. You've had an itch you can't scratch. Imagine that feeling. Days. Weeks. Years. Imagine that feeling times 200,000, plus 50,000 more. Imagine it's 130 degrees on the deck and tomorrow you're going home and you know if you don't scratch that itch now, you never will. You need a release. You need a target. And the who of it never once enters your mind.”
    — Tom Cruise in Jack Reacher

{*} I had to read it thoroughly a few months ago to try to improve an abysmal article on french Wikipedia called “Nipplegate”... Abysmal but still way more detailed than many Nobel Prize laureates' articles, although not quite as thorough as the Star Wars Kid article. We live in a strange culture.

I'm guessing you live near where there are are server farms (hosting or cloud), a large university or lots of high tech companies. The farther you get from those, the more likely prices will be higher.

I actually live in a very rural area, in the woods middle of a 150 acre parcel. as far as my heater / gas guzzler goes I make money on that thing and it works great it easily offsets its energy use seeing as how it pays my power bill and bought me a 12 gage shotgun and a 30.06 rifle. oh and for zero work too other than setup on my network. I do keep drives on hand and I run what many think is a home lab setup. I know im not typical in the home use department but im nowhere near professional. I have never been to school on any computer class or networking. I read and understand things very well.

I was talking about general geographic location. For example, if you live in or around Texas where a lot of hosting companies are, you'll see more servers for sale than where I live, Hawaii.
