  1. I need to buy a new DVD writer and would like it to be RPC1. The models that I can easily find in my area are:

    LG GH24NS
    Asus DRW-24D3ST
    Samsung SH-224DB and SH-224BB

The problem is they don't seem to have RPC1 firmwares available. Is this a thing of the past? Any other similarly-priced drives that I should hunt for that are both current and RPC1-patchable?

    Thanks!

RPC1 drives have not been available for 10 or so years.

For Region Free playback on RPC2 drives you must resort to software.

There is ZERO need for this any more. This is why they are a thing of the past. If you really and truly mean "DVD" and you don't actually mean "DVD and BD" when you say "DVD writer", VLC is free and can be used for DVD playback without worrying about region codes. If you need region free BD and DVD playback, the best solution is to buy AnyDVD HD as it provides region free BD services in addition to BD ripping capability (and both for DVD as well).

  4. I'm not getting a BD drive and I would like to be able to rip a DVD, not only play it. Is this no longer possible?

So just get AnyDVD. Same program but without the BD features.

  6. I'd rather get a free RPC1 firmware (if these are available for any current drive) than pay $50 or so for AnyDVD. It seems some local stores may still have LITE-ON iHAS124 and NEC AD-7280S drives, both of which have RPC1 firmware. I just hope they're actually in stock.

  7. Region codes mean nothing to DVD ripping software.

Liteon dvd drives are the easiest to patch anyway.
Which "dvd writer" hardware do you have to choose from??

    *edit* sorry, read toooo fast.
From the listed drives you'd probably get a Sammy and patch it to rpc2 autoreset. Just check with mcse tool if the drive is supported.

Many Samsung DVD-RW drivers are RPC-1 patched:

...sadly not yet the current Samsung SH-224DB
