    Hello everyone

System Spec: Windows XP Home Edition w/SP2

I want to try and see how much resources I can regain by removing programs from the task manager
via ctrl+alt+del and then hi-lighting each item I want to [DEL] from the list. For instance, if I try
and remove one of the (there's two of them) NETWORK SERVICES (aka, svchost.exe) the machine
will kick into 15 second before reboot mode and it shuts down.

Ok. There are as many as 25 items in the list at first boot up. I know that some of these I can
safely remove (because they are in my system tray area) but the remaining ~21 items I'm not
sure of, though I've gotten away w/ removing some and leaving only 17 items. I dare go futher
unless I now for sure, hence the opening of this discussion.

If you need a list of the items in my task manager, I think I might be able to post those, but not
today because I've been in the middle of a major multi-tasking about 8 virtualdub's and avisynth scripts
and programming and so on and so forth that I can't right now. Tomorrow, I can, if need be.

    Thanks,
    -vhelp 4611

Most of those are support for various services. You're going to have to go into Service Manager to disable the unneeded ones. BlackViper is the expert on which ones you can safely disable.

Well, over here, there are 35 processes running in the background, BUT
not all of them are shown in the TaskMgr window; however the truth is, ...
    I had seen nothing yet

Highly recommended to NOT use the CTL+ALT+DEL method to terminate processes unless you are absolutely certain that you know what the service is, what it does and if it can be safely terminated.

Go to: Start + Control Panel + Performance and Maintenance + Administrative Tools + Services

You will see a list of all services, a description of what it does and in some instances what will happen if you stop it, it's status (started or not) and how it starts (manual or automatic). Using this list you can look at each service that has started and determine if it is neccessary...the description is in plain english and makes it much easier than task manager. You can right click on each item to stop it, restart it or change how it starts. Using this method you can set an unnesessary service to start manually so it will not automatically start when you boot your computer.

read all 4 of these pages then go back and work on your services tweaks.

    http://members.internettrash.com/megapolon/winxptweak.html

if you don't want to do the research here are 2 reg files. one is the tweak and one to reset to original if the tweak turns off something you need.

To get a better idea of what process is using a service, replace TaskManager with Systernal's Process Explorer. Also, deleting services from inside TaskManager will make your system unstable. It would be best to use the ADMINISTRATIVE TOOLS > SERVICES function to stop services, as has been mentioned.

You can use MSConfig, but better to use a Startup Manager and stop the processes from loading at all.

There are a few, eg Mike Lin's Startup Control Panel

I'll Google for items I don't recognise before killing them. Check the reliability of any warnings. Beware of bogus "Virus!!!" warnings by clueless people, or hoaxers trying to get you to cripple your computer.

Yes. "BTW", sophisms are not a privilege or a private property of the Ancient Greek philosophy.
