  1. How to edit mkv file without loosing chapter stops?
    Any ideas?

I created mkv file from commercial music live DVD using MakeMKV.
MakeMKV also created chapter stops as present on DVD.
How to cut off (trim) 20 minutes long intro from this file beginning maintaining rest chapter stops of this single mkv file?
As intro contains of 10-15 chapters

Alternatively I could crop this mkv file with Avidemux but then there is no option to keep previous chapter stops. Correct?
Then how to re-create mkv chapter stops?

As it's a live show, precision of few seconds is Ok.

No clue if there is an editor that will do what you want but you could extract the chapters from the mkv with mkvextract, edit the chapter file to shift the times by the amount you've cut, merge the edited chapter file into a new mkv.

  3. Forgot to mention but my mkv file has several audio tracks - stereo, DD Surround, DTS 5.1 and subtitles.
Is it possible to keep also all audio tracks with Mkvextract?

And trim can be done with Avidemux?

You can cut the mkv using mkvtoolnix and it will automatically cut the chapters as well.

  5. Doesn't mkvtoolnix split all chapters into clips?
Or is there an option to cut off chapters 1-10 and keeping 11-25 with chapter stops?

  6. There is. Mkvmerge has number of different split modes. The "parts" mode would be used here with timecodes (not chapter numbers).

TMPGEnc MPEG Smart Renderer 5 will allow you to edit an mkv. It will import any existing chapter points. It will also import existing audio tracks, but not subtitles. It has a trial version so you can test it out.

Thanks, it looks I received expected results.
    I used MKVToolNix GUI v32.0.0

When I set "by parts base on timestamps"
00:00:00-00:02:00,00:19:56:00-01:08:17 Result was 2 files omitting 17 minutes in between.
00:00:00-00:02:00,+00:19:56:00-01:08:17 Result was single file omitting 17 minutes in between. That's what expected.

    00:00:00-00:02:00,00:19:56:00-01:08:17
with selected "link files" option, result was one single file, where something is wrong with indexing.
VLC takes 10-20 secunds to jump to next chapter.

    Thanks.

  10. There is another video TS file recorded from TV without chapters.
Usually I use Avidemux to convert ts to mkv for better compatibility.
What is easiest option to create such mkv chapter stops?
Can I just display video, search desired points, mark these as chapter starts and then output new mkv?

Or should I create an text or XML file with desired time stamps?
Then what must be xml exact content/format and how to merge chapter into mkv?

    Thanks.

Yep, use this: TMPGEnc MPEG Smart Renderer
    It imports the chapters.

Hybrid also imports them for re-encode.

That said, I never use chapters whatsoever. Modern skipping is accurate to the second, be it my Blu-ray player or WDTV.

    I cannot reproduce this.
    1. It won't create exactly one file for me but multiple ones. Check again, maybe you accidentally used different source file or command.
    2. --link option doesn't work with --split parts (The documentation doesn't mention this. If you need this feature you should ask the author on gitlab.)
You can of course still manually link them via the Header Editor.

P.S.: You don't have to enter start and ending time when using --split parts. E.g. if your movie starts at 00:00:00 and ends at 01:08:17 just write:
    -00:02:00,+00:19:56-

You can also leave the hours out if they aren't needed:
    -02:00,+19:56-

  13. Chapters are good for music DVDs.

You don't like a track, you press "next song please".
Or you like it and want to play again or just to find certain track.

I like to convert music DVD's to mkv and burn then several DVD's onto one BD-R disk.
Then it's easy to swap between performers, when needed.
I also enjoy to remove obscure and slow DVD menus.

Ah, yeah, music DVDs, I can see that.
I don't have many of those. And I just ripped as ISO anyway.

I didn't change input when testing time output different options.
Before I discovered a "+" option between time time stamps:

When there was single file output problem, when link option was selected, then looked for a work around and I linked 1st option's 2 split parts into one file, which result seemed OK at first glance.
But I believe a "+" between parts is correct choice.

    Thanks for a good hint
