DVD recorder won`t let me watch Sky

Hi, I`m new here so please be patient.
I have Toshiba DR20KB DVD recorder and it`s really easy to use . I have a problem though, in that if I am recording a channel then I cannot watch SKY, or if I set it to record while I am watching SKY , then it will turn SKY off when the recording begins.
I am not really technically minded, so any replies - please keep it simple.
Hope there is a solution to this.

You might help your cause if you state the following:

1. The make/model of your Sky Box
2. Sky or Sky+
3. or HD box
4. How is the Sky Box connected to the dvd-recorder - description of cables etc
