I will be buying one of these since it will be free for me. Can someone explain to me the difference, if there is one.

Western Digital WD10000CSRTL Caviar GP 1TB 3.5" Internal Hard Drive or

Seagate ST310005N1A1AS-RK 1TB 3.5" SATA Internal Hard Drive

    Greatly appreciate your opinion. Thanks

The Seagate has a 5Yr warranty and the WD has a 1Yr. Just that would make me prefer the Seagate.

That does make a difference, but what about speed or better performer. Any difference. And thanks for the quick response.

    Seagate is more reliable.

The WD is a "Green Power" drive which has a somewhat slower speed to save on power and thus save the planet (yeah, right). Some are also suggesting it is more reliable because of its lower speed/power and less heat generated.

The Seagate is considered one of the fastest drives out there currently, but some people are saying there is a firmware problem with some of these new Seagate drives.

Whether one is more reliable than the other is debatable. Newegg users seem to favor the WD drive by a slight margin. I've never had a hard drive of any brand fail on me yet and a couple of them are going on 7 years now (though most of them don't get daily use). I'd sure like to get one of these free.

Thanks i went to newegg and saw the favor towards WD. I'm still going with Seagate, i have now 3 WD raptor 10RPM, this should fit well with my raptors and probably almost same speed.

They're too similar to really make any difference. What I would recommend is a drive fan, either right in front or mounted to the bottom. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835106105

    Four different models?
    ST31000340AS
    ST31000340AS
    ST31000340NS
    ST31000340NS

    Aren't there really only two?

  12. NS is the Enterprise version. Better specs, about the same failure rate though.

I think AS series are desktop drives, and NS are intended for servers or RAID setups.
