NAS HDD Storage Capacity confusion

My WD NAS has two 3TB WD drives & in dashboard shows a total of 5.94TB capacity in spanning. Not sure about this figure given
the space lost by formatting. (for example my single usb 3TB HDD under my computer shows a total capacity of just 2.7TB, 300GB lost to formatting).

All my stuff on my NAS takes up 4.56TB according to rightclick-properties in windows explorer. Yet in my NAS dashboard under capacity
it all adds up to just over 5TB with 877GB free.

So how much free space would my NAS really have?

Most of the difference is in what TB means in different situations. To drive manufacturers a TB is 1000 * 1000 *1000 * 1000. To Windows a TB is 1024 *1024 * 1024 * 1024. Ie, the difference between 1,000,000,000,000 and 1,099,511,627,776.

Yeah I now understand, like different units of speed, KM/H vs Miles/H.

Just have to either divide or multiply by 1.073. For example 3TB / 1.073 = 2.7TB to windows.

By the way, the 2^10 (1024) byte system now uses the terms Kibi, Mebi, Gibi, Tebi, etc., abbreviated as KiB, MiB, GiB, TiB, etc.

The conversion value depends on whether you state the size in KiB, MiB, GiB, or TiB. 1,000,000,000,000 Bytes converts to:

TiB, divide by 1.099, (1024 * 1024 * 1024 * 1024 / 1,000,000,000,000), 0.91 TiB
GiB, divide by 1.074, (1024 * 1024 * 1024 / 1,000,000,000), 931 GiB
MiB, divide by 1.049, (1024 * 1024 / 1,000,000), 953,289 MiB
KiB, divide by 1.024, (1024 / 1000), 976,562,500 KiB
