Hey guys, I wish to record only the audio playing in a TV show. What would I need for both hardware and software to record the audio clips in the tv show please? This is only a one time thing so I would not want expensive hardware and software options, thx.
This is my tv:

You would want expensive hardware and software options because this is only a one time thing? Understandable.
You need search terms to look for. Your TV outputs digital optical audio via a connector known as TOSLINK. You may want to convert it to digital coaxial for your receiver, to USB audio for your computer or active speaker, or to good old analog audio to use pretty much anywhere. I am surprised I could not immediately find TOSLINK to HDMI audio converter. -
Sorry fo my typo, it should have been I would NOT want expensive option, I have adjusted my post.
I am looking for an easy way to go from the TV Audio OUT into my pc somehow. -
Oh wait, just found this:

Will give it a shot when I get the cable, report back. -
I am thinking dual RCA from the TV's Audio OUT to the pc's Mic IN?
-
Shucks, you're correct, the AUDIO connectors are IN's not OUT so this tv not having an audio OUT is the problem? Or rather I see what you mean now that only OUT is a Digital OUT.
-
nope, that is audio in to tv, not out. (whoops, beat me during my typing)
only option is spdif/toslink. which isn't the cheapest, and may be copy-protected.

I think I have a toslink cable somewhere which I have never used, will look for it.
-
If you have a receiver, they usually have toslink input. From there, you can choose whatever output you want.

You need something like this: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/321194180974

Most Samsungs, and I would venture to say most modern TVs, do not have headphone out, but do have optical spdif/toslink out and HDMI ARC as the audio out options.
The adapter cable Axel mentions could work in his and similar scenarios, but it is not optimal - line in levels are much lower than headphone out levels so there is the possibility of overloading the input stage sensitivity on capture unless you can adjust the out level low enough.

Somebody here recommended this Toslink to USB device in another thread: https://hifimediy.com/product/hifime-ur23-spdif-optical-to-usb-converter/ I don't know if it decrypts encrypted optical audio signals.

Guys, shouldn't this solve the problem where I can connect the TV's Optical OUT straight to the Mic Input on the pc then record from Audacity?

Optical Toslink carries an optical signal (light) to supply digital audio. The mic input on a PC is for analog audio provided in an electrical signal. That cable is a simple optical cable. It doesn't convert the digital optical Toslink signal to an electrical analog audio signal. So, no, it won't work.

Oh I see now, need to convert the signal so then either of these 2 converters which was recommended
https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/321194180974
https://hifimediy.com/product/hifime-ur23-spdif-optical-to-usb-converter/
together with the cable I linked to above, together that should so it? -
The Hifime converter comes with a Toslink cable, so you shouldn't need another one unless the included cable is the wrong length or faulty.
The "Digital Optical Coax Coaxial Toslink to Analog Audio Converter Adapter RCA DAC" needs a Toslink cable with a standard optical connector on both ends. The small round yellow port on the box is for a coaxial connection, which uses an electrical signal to carry digital audio rather than an optical signal.Ignore list: hello_hello, tried, TechLord, Snoopy329 -
ok I will get the Hifime one and will report back on this. Appreciate the help!

If you run into trouble when using the Hifime device, it looks like there is some useful information in the reviews on the Hifime product page in addition to the information contained in the VideoHelp thread about the Hifime device
