Does the registered version get rid of the 3x3 box in the upper right corner?

I don't think that's the Elecard decoder. I believe the TMPGEnc MPEG-2 encoder adds that. It doesn't seem to happen when encoding MPEG-1.

no, it is the elecard decoder. you don't need the elecard MPEG-2 decoder filter when you play MPEG-1 back, that's why you don't see it.
but i think that is a watermark and the registered does remove it. but if you're gonna spend $20 on that, i'd really suggest just buying a $40 DVD drive, because retail versions often come with software, so in essence you'd be spending $20 on a drive and $20 on better software too.
