  1. I'm trying to understand which filter to use in handbrake - deinterlace or detelecine - and if detelecine, whether to use VFR.

Is there some way to determine whether a DVD has been interlaced vs telecined?

Look for a scene with movement, then step through the 5 frame sequence. If you see split fields over 5 frames, it is interlace. If you see 3 progressive frames followed by 2 split fields, it is telecine.

See this thread where I posted a sample sequence of telecine frames near the bottom of the page.
