What is the fastest way (but still reasonable good quality) to convert a windows AVI video (dv 720 x 480 16:9) to a format acceptable by itunes to sync to ipod touch 3rd generation?

I tried using the h.264 encoder in adobe media encoder. It works, but is very slow. On a 2.8Ghz quad core PC, even setting to CBR it still take 1 hour to encode about 40 minutes of video. Surely there's a better solution? Free solutions preferred.

If you have a graphic card with cuda hardware encoding support you can try it, like Badaboom.

Or else try any ffmpeg frontend like the very basic ipodme.
