Recently when I try and watch .avi files using Intervideo WinDVD on my laptop all I am seeing are those visualizations you get in Windows Media Player when you play audio...

I have tested various DVD's and other .avi files that I know I had watched perfectly well on the same laptop and all the same Infact its not just WinDVD but I tried watching using Windows Media Player too... Same problem.

Another curious thing is although I am definitely starting the film from the start of the file, the 'Windows Visualisatsions' and audio always start from 3minutes exactly... Go figure.

    I'm desperate - please help...

WMP uses visualizations when it doesn't have the codec needed to playback the file. Try uninstalling your divx codec and installing the latest version.

To verify the files are good, you can install VLC. It uses its own codecs, so if the files playback normally, then you have a codec issue. If they don't play, then you have corrupt files.
