  1. I want to record streaming videos while they are being played in VLC.

I am playing an HLS stream in VLC using an M3U8 link. If I click Record in VLC to start the recording and click Record again to stop the recording, the recording is saved as an MP4 and can be played later. If the connection drops before I stop the recording in VLC, the saved MP4 is not finalized properly and is not playable--MOOV atom not found.

How do I get VLC to save the recording to another container format, like MPEGTS, FLV, or MKV, that will be playable if the stream connection drops while it is being recorded in VLC?

  2. I believe it's Tools -> Preferences (show all settings) -> Stream output -> Muxers -> Mux module...

I was able to get VLC to record while playing a local MPG file (muxer set to Auto) but not an internet m3u8 link, no matter which muxer I used. For example:

    http://iphone-streaming.ustream.tv/uhls/6540154/streams/live/iphone/playlist.m3u8

Changing the Muxer for Stream output didn't have any affect on this. The recordings are still saved as MP4's regardless of which Mux module is selected.
