"Dell, Lenovo and HP kill laptops with hard disk drives, marking the end of an era.
The biggest laptop vendors in the world no longer sell laptops with hard disk drives, at least in the US."

What's about this "surprised", was you "surprised" too when CD-ROM Drives changed Floppy Disk Drives?

Those laptops with hard disk should upgrade to SATA3 SSD. The speed gain will be around 3X. Apple solders storage chips onto motherboard and that's bad for repair.

  4. Modern laptops should use m2 drives.
Older laptops should be upgraded to ssd, even slower ones are better than hdd drives.

I'm more surprised they didn't do this 7 years ago. Even for the price-conscious, it doesn't make sense to stick with HDDs. Their (current) sole greater benefit is capacity - if you are looking for a 12TB drive, so similar or more, then they make sense (and that shouldn't be the boot drive anyway).

I like using M.2 drives for boot drives since they have come down in price. Both of my self-built desktops use a 1 TB M.2 drive as their boot drive. The HP laptop that I got in December 2021 has a small (256GB) M.2 drive. The thinner HP laptops with Tiger Lake CPUs that I looked at in December 2021 all had M.2 drives.

  8. I suspect that the reason they stuck with hard drives so long was to use up inventory.
