I have tried 3 different drives that are DVD-R and say they read at 8x but a 90 minute movies is taking me 30 minutes to copy which is only 3x. I have tried dvd fab and 3-4 others all with the same results
Is this the best way to copy and this is just the fastest speed or is there a better way?
Try StreamFab Downloader and download from Netflix, Amazon, Youtube! Or Try DVDFab and copy Blu-rays! or rip iTunes movies!

Are you sure your drives aren't rip-locked? Mac drives (like SuperDrives) do tend to be riplocked, in my limited experience.

Re the suggestion to reset DMA in dvdfab here is my screen shot I went through ALL settings and didnt see a reset DMA anywhere.
Re the rip-locked yes I am sure not using an apple drive but a pioneer one and it works just not at the speed it should
QUESTION: how long should it take to copy a 90 minute movie? -
The drive speed is (largely) unrelated to the duration of the movie. DVD 1x speed is defined as 1.32 MB/s, and 8x as 10.57 MB/s.
Dirt, scratches and read errors may cause the drive the re-read sections, and that will slow down the copy process.
Decrypting takes time as well, and will slow down the copy process. This part is more linked to the CPU speed than the drive speed. -
