I recently borrowed a small MPEG4 video camera from a freind. The camera stores its videos in ASF format on the little SD card inside. Now Windows Media Player plays them fine because it downloaded the corresponding codec for itself. However the files cannot be opened in Movie Maker, Premier or any other conversion program i have tried.
Below is a link to a short 272K clip from the camera.

If anyone can help at all it would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers
Nick

Hi Nick,
Your link doesn't seem to be working.
https://www.videohelp.com/tools?toolsearch=&s=&orderby=Name&hits=50&convert=ASF+to&dvda...+or+List+tools
You can search the tools and the guides section by format conversion - this is a link to all the ASF --> ??? tools. Also, you might want to take a look at VirtualDub ASF, which can be found near the bottom of this page:
http://www.digital-digest.com/dvd/downloads/showsoftware_virtualdub_346.html
VirtualDub is like a Swiss army knife when it comes to video editing and encoding. You can use it to convert to whatever you like, or to frameserve the ASF into a program like TMPGEnc to make a DVD-compliant file.
Hope this helps!
Cobra
PS - Welcome to VideoHelp! -
thanks for the reply, i have tried VirtualDub only to be faced with a notice stating that microsoft owns the patent to .ASF files and intercompatibly isnt a frequent occurance.

Here's a genuine link to 1.3c:

I don't use ASF files. I didn't realise that 1.4 didn't do it - I found a version that says it supports ASF and linked to it.

it works fine playing in media player, it had to download the codec but after that its fine, can you access the file at the end of the link i put in my first comment?
id be very grateful if you could see if it works with your setup -
I can't get to the file either (not authorized)
I tell you what ...
put the entire next line in your next post:
[*url]imag0039.asf[/url]
(but without the * - just put it there for demonstration of the bbcode required)
... then click on the Browse button and browse to your ASF file (you can upload files up to 2MB in size this way), then hit submit. If in doubt, Google it. -
I got the same error you did in virtualdub 1.3c, but I could open it no worries in Windows Movie Maker and TMPGenc Plus.
If in doubt, Google it. -
when i try to open it in Movie Maker all i get is
C:\My Shared Folder\Digicam\Bowling in Melbourne\IMAG0021.ASF could not be imported. The selected file is not valid or is corrupted.
i also get the same with TMPGenc
"cannot open file or is unsupported"
EDIT: i have TMPGenc Plus 2.5, could it be i have the wrong version? -
in TMPGEnc, do you get the "cannot open, or unsupported" error message ? If so, try raising the priority of the DirectShow Multimedia File Reader so that it's at the top of the list. You can do this in Options > Environmental Setting > VFAPI Plug-in, then right-click on it and go to Higher Priority. Repeat this if necessary until it's at the top and make sure that it's ticked.
If in doubt, Google it. -
nah, still get the same message
p.s i really appreciate you helping though thanks -
