I wonder which codec gives the best quality for the avi file after ripping. Does anyone know?
And which software is the best dvd ripper?

  2. There is no best. depends on what your doing with it. The best ripper is the one who works best for you. Thats like saying whats the best movie or whats the best brand of toilet paper.

Try DVDFab HD Decrypter for ripping newer DVDs. Older DVDs, doesn't much matter if you are only transfering the DVD data to your hard drive.

If you are converting to Xvid/Divx, try AutoGK or FairUse Wizard for a simple conversion. If you want more control and the best quality, learn more about the codec you are using and it's settings. Similar answer with X264, just lower bitrates for the same quality.

  4. "Best" isn't a single dimensional issue when it comes to video. What do you mean by "best"? The most compression with least artifacting, regardless of how long it takes or how compatible it is on different devices? The widest compatability for posting on the web or set-top DVD players? A compromise of compression and encoding speed but only for playback on your PC? The most friendly codec for use in an editor?
