A little retro video for those who never saw what D-VHS was capable of and apparently as early as 1993 i.e. 1920x1080 at 28 Mbps.

I tend to believe they stole that rip from a youtuber that I watch, "Techmoan".
Techmoan's episode on D-VHS

Entire rip of that demo tape on his second Techmoan account

If you think that is impressive, take a look at modern tape tech:

Personally, I really miss magnetic storage. -

Not sure why you said this: LTO, as well as DVHS, is magnetic storage.
Unless you were trying to be sarcastic. But then you still missed the mark - LTO is the largest enterprise-wide form of automated, offline storage. May not be suited for you or many casual data consumers, but it still has a strong standing among archive options.

For all I can say is tapes can be a very reliable long term storage media, if they are stored and handled properly. Hard disk failure on the other hand can be spontaneous and unpredictable.

So there wouldn't be any confusion which part of your pithy post I was referring to. A lot gets lost in translation on this forum. But since you are just talking about boot drives and "other" drives you might stick in a personal computer case, I disagree as well. ssd's usurped hdd's role as boot drives long ago. "Other" drives are next. I look forward to the day when I can kiss my spinning rust goodbye forever.

I'm talking about Tape vs HDD which both use magnetic media to store data. SDD, which is certainly better than a HDD albeit much more expensive, uses transistors to store data instead of magnetic fields and so is not part of my point. Tapes are great and would certain use them, only problem is the high price of the machine used to write to the tapes and the huge seek times/changing of tapes. Making them only practical for archival data storage.
I just found your comment of "Personally, I really miss magnetic storage." to be odd, especially now knowing your apparent disdain for HDD. -
Everything I want to say about this topic on this forum is in here.
