win98 se / winxp pro
a lot of programs i use just won't run on xp
so i use win98 most of the time.HELL AINT A BAD PLACE TO BE -
I am surprised by how many XP votes there are on the main page (60%). Especially considering how slow and buggy XP is in the driver department. I persoanlly use a Dual boot 98/2000 pro setup.
I find Xp to be a pain to even look at, much less use. -
I'm on XP Pro, but if I knew what I know now, I'd have skipped the "upgrade" from W2k Pro... I'm on the verge of having a 6 months Linux fit again, that I regularly get after too much exposure to MS

win2k all the way.

Interesting question. I had assumed that most here were using Win98 because of the VFW drivers and VirtualDub. Is it possible to use VFW drivers under WinXP? Or are you people using a wrapper program on your WDM driver? Is such a wrapper built into WinXP?
I suppose you can guess I am using Win98. I have Win2000 on my laptop, but that is not my capture machine.

I've never had a problem with XP....if you don't like the look, turn it off.
I have also used Win2K, 98 and ME..... -
Windows 98SE, stable enough for me and runs most programs.

Win2k and in a small partition w98se just for "those" times
I'don't like WinXP, so when w2k support gonna turn limited, my next move gonna be Mac or Linux -
XP Pro for me, the only thing I don't like about XP is it tries to help you too much when it should just shutup and let you get on with it. Intersting that more people are using 3.1 than Win95, I always hated W95 ever since that day when I bought home and it didn't work on my 486 like Bill said it would.
-
@Craig Tucker, when the day comes and the software that "I" need will not
run on Windows98SE, it will be the day that i will simply stop using any kind
of Microsoft Product.
I've already been pre-preparing both my OS/2 Warp 4.51 and Mandrake 9.0
So as long as for the needs I have Windows98SE works, I couldn't care less
what Microsoft and other companies forces their users to do.

I use Win98SE for most of my work. Have Win XP Pro for capping DV avi's to get around the 4 gig limit, but don't recommend XP for anything else. Nothing bloody works on it!
-
I think the reason for the high XP vote is the fact that nearly all new (since 2001) PCs ship with XP as standard.
Out of curiosity, of those who chose XP, how many of you bought it to upgrade W98 or W2K? Do you think it was worth it?

I moved from win 2k to XP, but can't say I've noticed much difference apart from a few programs that don't work properly (or not at all) on XP.
I'm surprised to see so many people saying they think 98 is more stable/better than XP however, I used to have to use 98 at work and hated every second of it, maybe it's just me but I found it incredibly unstable. -
I Use my 98SE as a Web/FTP server, and it's been running stable for the last
3 years, and I have no intention of moving to any crap called "NT" Technology
I'm sticking to DOS based, where I got the control, and not Microsoft.Email me for faster replies!

Console apps rule. After all, that's just what everything is, when all GUI is peeled off. Less code = less that can go wrong. Problem is, Windows has spoiled the user base to the point where command line utilites are hard to find, and even the simplest app just has to come skinnable, expandable, adaptable... requiring 512 MB ram and a PIV to even start. But I never made friends with 9X - when forced to use it at work 8 hrs a day, I think I averaged 4 reboots/day, loosing various amount of work each time. 98 SE was the best of its breed, but to me, that didn't say much... W2K, I have running for weeks on end at work. XP Pro - Well, a full day is what I get from it, before it starts getting sluggish, and no system resources left.
