Make ass subtitles with aegisub or subtitle edit. Your player must of course support it also.

Do you mean just the file name or is there a name embedded in the MKV if the latter then use MKVMergeGUI highlight the video and under track name change it to whatever you want.

You can also embed a font within the file structure of an MKV under attachments - this is often done for 3D movies using a special font. Do a search for embed a font in a MKV file.

    fig 1

As in figure 1 I have added 1 file in the attachments part of MKVToolnixGui. If were to add 4-5 more for files would I be able to choose which font will be used? Or would it automatically use the first one it came to? John

You can do it in the latest version if you wish - when you load a file into the input window to the right is the attachment tab.
Suggest you experiment and try things, that's how I learn to use software and I'm 78 years old....

It probably depends on the media player involve. VLC doesn't appear to support it and possibly MKV files don't support it other than for subtitkes. You may get specific support in the MKV forum in DOOM. OR try the MKV home page.

  17. VLC does support using embedded fonts but it is not sufficient to simply attach the font to the mkv file. You have to convert the subtitle to ASS format and within the ASS format explicitly specifiy the font you want to use.

Aegisub can help setting the style.

Nope, it must be placed together with the other streams (video and audio).

^ Yes, the creators of the file-format were trolling when they chose that name:
