I'd like to make a CD that'll work on both a PC and a VCD-cable DVD player.
The PC side of the disk would contain a Director presentation that would start automatically when inserted into a CD-ROM drive.
The VCD side would play when inserted into a DVD drive.
Is there a problem placing PC data onto a VCD disk? Will it interfere with the DVD's ability to play the VCD? Is there a special directory set aside for "extra" data files that the DVD player will "ignore?"
And, to make the Director play automatically, I'd need to put an autorun.inf file in the root directory of the CD. Will a DVD player ignore this file?

You can definitely make a VCD with additional data files. This is supported in the VCD standard and a number of authoring proggies will let you do this -- including Nero and VCDImager.
With Nero, all you have to do is to drag the additional files/folders onto the VCD filesystem panel.
Your disc should be simply recognised as a CD-ROM on a PC (unless you have additional software installed on your PC that automatically detects a VCD and loads software) and will autoplay whatever is in the autorun.inf.
This disc should also play without problems on a stand-alone player (which would simply ignore the additional files on the filesystem).
You should keep your filenames in the MS-DOS 8.3 format to avoid naming problems.

Thanks for the reply. Should I place my PC data files in the "root" of the VCD? Is there a folder that is created by Nero for the VCD that I can put things in that won't interfere with the play of a VCD on a DVD player?
Can I make my own folder(s) in the root of the VCD to put my files in? If so, will this interfere with normal DVD play?

You can place additional files anywhere you want. It shouldn't interfere with its playback.
