In process of replacing original radio/cassette with one that accepts SD cards (*mp3 and wma) and remote controls an iPod/iPad.

Also replaced factory door speakers with larger Sony's (minor metal cutting) and added mid range speakers (4) to the headrests.

PS: This is a 2 seat convertible so no place to put cassettes or CDs. SD cards are perfect for this.

I have a stock Pioneer deck with 6 speakers and I have the option of connecting a Apple Ipod.....but since I don't like Apple products I convert all my music to MP3 files and burn them to cd discs.

  8. My Suby had a CD player with am/fm from the factory when I bought it. It was a piece of junk.
3 days later I replaced it with a Pioneer with CD that played mp3 or wma off of disk, and had the am/fm radio.
Made the stock speakers come alive. The dealer thought I replaced the speakers too
Just replaced that Pioneer with a new one that has the same features, plus a USB port for iPod or memory sticks.
Makes the stock speakers come alive even more. Pays to buy a good radio and know how to set up an EQ

  9. I replaced the stock radio in my Saturn, years ago. At first I used a Kenwood tape deck I had laying around, right away the sound improved. I had converted my CDs to MP3 and played them on a Lyra through a cassette adapter. Then a couple years ago I got tired of this setup and got a cheap Chinese deck with SD and USB from Xscargo. Replaced the stock speakers with some nice RCA 2 ways and got a 10" sub box plus a mono amp. For the final touch, I hooked up some 2" mids to a small Kenwood amp that was gathering dust; that helped raise and widen the sound stage. After a little more work to balance everything the car sounds as good as the living room.

Pioneer CD with AM/FM The CD plays .mp3, .wma & .wav The deck has just recently started acting up (sometimes it's unresponsive), till I pop off the head unit and put it back in. It's not even 4yrs old! Looks like I'll be looking for a new one soon before it completely goes. My next one will have a usb port. That'll be nice in the winter (no moving parts).

Try cleaning the contacts with a soft white pencil eraser (not pen eraser).

Well, internationally, there are a lot of us that don't even have a car!
I use a 3rd gen iPod, or a 10 year old micro digital sony FM player, when I'm traveling. The FM is a little useless on train rides, though.
    Waiting for the BIG one!

I think I'll stop by OfficeMax and get one of those erasers. Thanks for the suggestion.
I had thought of cleaning them w/ alcohol like I did my Atari 2600 cartridges as a kid.

Poor things, how do you live?

I'm greedy, having 5. They are fitted with:
Kenwood AM/FM RDS radio cassette with 6 disc CD changer in the glove box
Philips AM/FM/SW RDS radio cassette with 6 disc CD changer in the boot
    Sony AM/FM RDS CD radio
and 2 of them have identical Kenwood AM/FM RDS radio with CD player that reads MP3 and WMA format files and an AUX socket for an external MP3 player.

I've also got a cassette adapter and an FM transmitter if I need to connect anything else in the cars that don't have the Kenwoods.
