  1. Toshiba Encore Windows 8.1 Tablet

This news is as of Nov'2013, but seems like Windows 8.1 taking up-swing in tablets, smart phones & mobile applications.

    Toshiba's latest Windows 8.1 gadgets include a pocket-size tablet and a laptop-tablet hybrid.

    Encore
First up is the Encore, an 8-inch Windows 8.1 tablet. Toshiba chose that size so that you could hold the tablet with one hand.

The Encore has an almost identical look to Toshiba's Excite tablets, with a polycarbonate textured silver-color back cover and rounded edges. It has a 1,280x800-pixel IPS multitouch display that is big enough to fit the Windows 8.1 Start screen in both landscape and portrait modes.

Inside, it has an Intel Bay Trail Atom processor, which promises fast performance, plus 32GB of internal storage, and a microSD slot to add an additional 32GB of storage, which is impressive for a tablet of this size. The tablet also has an 8-megapixel camera, dual microphones, and a Micro-HDMI port. Because it ships with Windows 8.1, you can run Windows 8 apps and Windows 7 programs on the Encore.

Microsoft wants you to think that because their business depends on that really being true, but that doesn't make it so. I heard them claim how their OS on phones was a complete success and then I read more balanced reports saying that Nokia was getting beat up badly in the marketplace because nobody wants a Lumia phone.

Maybe if in 2012 they had a tablet at this price point it could have been a success, or would have at least had more sales before word got out that Win 8 (or 8.1) sucks, but too little, too late. At this point most tablet buyers have learned that they don't actually need to run Microsoft Office on a freakin' tablet and their tablet needs are met by both Apple and various Android based options.

I haven't seen Win 8.1 yet, but Win 8 is a POS. If you ever want to do anything more on a device running it than look at a few pictures (good luck trying to get it to display them one after another - it can be done, but not by default), watch YouTube videos and maybe send email to your friends, you will hate it. Passionately.
