  1. I'm currently using HandBrake to compress my home videos with the AVC x264 library. However, I recently saw a video that was compressed using the HEVC x265 library and was very impressed with the compression and quality.

I opened the HEVC video in MediaInfo and this was the data it showed:

    Video
    ID : 1
    Format : HEVC
Format/Info : High Efficiency Video Coding
    Format profile : Main 10@L3.1@Main

    Height : 544 pixels
    Display aspect ratio : 2.35:1

How can I enter those settings in the HandBrake UI to compress my videos with the same efficiency? I'm looking to compress my videos with the same settings as the ones listed above.

    Thanks for your help.

This appears to be the SLOW preset, with ref=4 specified (default 3).
The encode set MAIN10 profile, level Auto

Bitrate control specified ABR at a rate of 1133 (probably single pass)

  3. That makes sense, since encoding at slower speeds leads to better compression, but how did you get that ref=4 means the slow encode setting? Is there a conversion guide?

Not really, I just had some stats saved for some of the presets, I found the one that looks the closest.
ABR at single pass not advised, 2-pass much better

  5. Wrote something 6 years ago to convert MediaInfo 'Encoding settings' to x265 command line: Mis265 there are probably some changes since then, but it might help to get started.
