  1. My system: Fedora Core 5 and xfce
hardware: old Laptop, which came with Windows 98 seven years ago (the exactly hardware data are not availlable at the moment)

On this old Laptop i would like to run a video( aprox.10 min) Demo-loop.

Which program is best for that purpose? It should be quick and small.

I would like to run that video from an USB-Hard-drive.

I will produce that video by myself, so I can choose the codec.

Which is the best way of running the video: a videoplayer or DVD-player which runs the VIDEO-TS -image from the USB-hard-disc?

    Thanks for Info

That hardware data may be important. Is the USB 1.1 or 2.0? Remember, in linux, the video players are the DVD players, so that shouldn't matter. My first thought would be to use MPlayer since mencoder should support x264

  3. CPU: Tillamook 166-266 Mhz, MMX (INTEL MM0-Modul)
    Chipset: INTEL 430 TX
RAM 16 MP+Extension ??? I could not find the command which tells me my hardwaredata. I know, there is one, but cannot remember and could not find info in the web.

This Laptop is very slow and old.
Do I have a chance to view a video of apox. 10 min. ?
Because the hardDisc has got only 2 GB I have to use a USB-harddisc.

USB: I use Fedora core 5 and can use normal modern USB-sticks. Do not know, how I can get the info which USB the laptop has got.

    Thanks for Info

  4. Another Question for the use of Video on this old and slow Laptop:

Is it better to make a film with lets say MPEG-1 codec for slow streaming or is it better do make a DVD-image ?
