I have some old .vcr files from my old All In Wonder card. How do I convert those to normal video formats?

I am really having to go back in memory here, but if I remember correctly the ATI .vcr format was just MPEG-2 with a custom header on it. Honestly, you should never have saved in this format because ATI's cards all allow you to record in proper MPEG-2 format and the .vcr stuff just adds to the complexity. I don't know if there are programs that know how to deal with that format but I think in the past that people were using ATI's own software to convert them to standard MPEG-2 using some kind of library function that came with the software. A quick internet search showed quite a few posts from people looking for solutions to convert other than using ATI's own Media Library and I didn't find any that worked, although I hardly spent a lot of time looking.

smartel: Virtualdub doesn't support mpeg2 directly. You need the mpeg2 plugin, http://fcchandler.home.comcast.net/~fcchandler/Plugins/MPEG2/index.html.

Wow, thanks for all the responses!

I tried to play the files in 3 players (VLC, GOM, MPCHC) and got sound with no picture. Media info says it mpg2. I just tried the renaming suggestion and got static sound with no picture. VirtualDub-MPG2 got a "Cannot Detect File Type" error when loading the VCR file and "Out Of Memory" when loading the MPG file. Womble would pretend to load it but not play sound or video with either extension.
I also tried Adobe Encore and Premiere Pro 5.5.

I found the following which works for playback:

    http://forums.amd.com/game/messageview.cfm?catid=260&threadid=157265&highlight_key=y

Now I have to figure out how to get the file onto a DVD with Encore...

  14. Been a long time since I messed with these, but I THINK that MPG2cut2 was able to cut these, not sure about a conversion.

Graphedit can also open these, I know I exported the text files and SFAIK you could export the video as well.

They are basically MPG2 files with the closed captions included as a custom ATI text file.

Looks like it won't install without a AIW card. Maybe you can find someone who has it installed and will send you a copy of the media center folder. With luck the converter program will work.
