  1. Oh noes! A newbie starts a thread!

    From my thread Here I have a Mat[Piece of--Ed.]shita DVD-R UJ-857E. Unless a compatible disc cleaner resurrects it . . . I am doomed to get a new drive .

I did searching on HERE and a number of other places, but unfortunately recommendations for drives that will work well with Mac tend to be old. Some Mac gurus recommend "Other World Computing" and I am looking at their OWC Value Line USB2.0/1.1 Super-MultiDrive with LightScribe, but I have had a bad experience with that company.

I was also looking at the ASUS USB 2.0 8x DVD Writer External Optical Drive SDRW-08D1S-U.

However, reading these fora, I notice that many recommend--highly--for a lot less money--the SONY OPTIARC drive:
Sony Nec Optiarc AD-7241S-0B 24X Dual Layer DVD+/-RW SATA Drive with LightScribe

Does that really work as an external drive?

    Recommendations most welcome!

    Some Mac gurus
Too many koolaid drinkers in that crowd.

    8x DVD Writer External Optical
No slim 8x drives -- they're all crap.

    SONY OPTIARC drive
    Or Samsung or Pioneer, yes.
I'd look at getting the Pioneer external drive available here for $40 plus shipping.
I've bought several drives from there, all were excellent.

You mean the refurbished: Pioneer DVR-X162Q 20x DVD±RW DL USB 2.0 External Drive w/Qflix
    & Software (Black)

It says it is only Windowz compatible.

That Qflick software is for Windows. I wouldn't use it anyway.

Hardware doesn't know the difference between Linux, OS X, Solaris, Windows, etc.

  8. And just in time. I screwed up something with a system program and decided to seriously back up some things before fixing it. I noticed my MatSHITa drive is a bit . . . "slow" at reading some data now.

Now if only I could make the Pioneer Region Free . . . .

Either use AnyDVD or check www.rpc1.org ...

  10. Unfortunately, that seems to be only a PC program.

I have followed that site, but I cannot find anything for the Pioneer DVR-X162Q, but thanks for the help!
