Question about auto color correction.

Here is the situation, I have old TV-Show DVD (dating back to 2002), they never been re-released (and probably never will) and the colors are clearly wrong (way too dark or simply flat).

I there a codec(s) with avisynth that can correct that to a normal standard (I mean automatic way) ?

I've searched and found codec autolevel and HDRAGC but not sure if it's the good way.

There is no such thing as a 'normal standard', but using AutoAdjust (https://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=167573) and tweaking the settings to your liking might help. SmoothAdjust (https://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=154971) might also be interesting.

ColorYUV() has autogain and autowhite options: ColorYUV(autogain=true, autowhite=true). But you're usually better off doing manual adjustments.

Autolevel and HDRAGC aren't "codecs". They're luminance level adjusting filters. Sometimes they work well, sometime they don't work so well, and they always require that you learn to adjust their operating parameters for best results. Neither of those filters will correct colors.


As jagabo suggested, ColorYUV() and the Tweak() functions are suggested form manual adjustment, which usually works better anyway. Learn tom work with histograms so you can look at data graphs to know what you're doing.

There is also RGBAdjust() and Levels(). Some corrections need to be done in YUV, others in RGB. Some YUV operations can only be done in ColorYUV(), others in Tweak().

If you upload a sample, be sure to include shots with a range of brightnesses, multiple colors, and things where we have some idea what the colors should be.
