Hey all, sorry if this has been asked before. I was wondering if it was possible to restore old Laurel and Hardy films? Specifically, I wanted to remove the flickering, cue marks, black spots, etc.

Here's an example of the output I'm looking for: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HCSELv-koGo&ab_channel=jeffsabu. Image

Does anyone know how I could do this? Thanks in advance.

A great peice of software for windows only

I made a tutorial on it's basic use, but you may need to dig a bit deeper to achieve your desired result.
If your content is 'video' then you may have to do some research to get the best settings.
I use it for basic degrain and cleaning of 8mm cine film.

Why reinvent the wheel? The work has already been done and you already know that since your picture and YouTube link point to the restored version. Is this some sort of a troll post?

I'd be interested in taking a look at the restored version of "From Soup to Nuts" (1928).
I haven't seen any recent restorations, but a set of DVD's I rented from the library a few years
ago (supposedly restored) it still looked terrible

  5. Pretty much everything of commercial merit -- and that would include Laurel & Hardy -- has been restored. I suggest you look at the TCM site to see if they have any of L&H's films scheduled. If you can watch TCM through your TV or Internet service, you can also use their app to gain access to about 100 of the films currently in rotation. These change every week or two.

If you have a few dollars to spare, you can purchase these TCM restoration, rather than waiting for them to be broadcast:

Laurel & Hardy: The Definitive Restorations

If you want to do the restoration yourself, just yesterday I helped someone over in doom9.org with a cartoon that had horrible flicker. This link will take you directly to my post where I linked to my "before/after" video showing the results.

I was really happy with my flicker reduction.

Here in this forum, there are three massively long threads, all started by VideoFred, which provide scripts which you can use to do your own restorations.

Thanks for sharing this. The output of your video looks incredible.

But I'm using mac not windows. Could you upload your code to Github or Google drive or something like that?

  8. My work is on AVISynth and my scripts are at doom9.org, as I already posted. I don't think you can run any of it natively on a Mac, but if you can load and run Windows (e.g., using Bootcamp) I think you can proceed.
