  1. I've had the player for about a year or so now. It play 80-90% of my 300+ DivX/XVid collection. SVCD/DVD playback are fine too.

However, it can't playback DivX/XVID files with custom quantization tables (well, it does play them, but they are smeary because it defaults to standard quantization tables), nor does it support QPEL or GMC.

I'm just wondering if there's a DVD/DivX player on the market that is superior in terms of compatibility to the Philips 642 (ie could play the above mentioned files correctly, and perhaps other issues.)

I've seen an LG DivX model listed, but not sure if it's any better.

    Thanks in advance,

    Matt Lawson

BTW I live in Canada, if that helps.

Just about anything would be better. The LG should be using a MTK chipset which offers much better support than ESS. As well as better handling CQM's it also handles qpel. MTK players also work better with wide screen TV's.

LG is a little different in some aspects than other MTK players since as understand it they wrote their firmware from scratch. For instance they were about the first MTK based player to correctly handle packed bitstream with multiple consecutive bframes.

  3. If you want GMC and Qpel support get a MTK based Divx player. You can get a RJ-800DVX for $70 plus it is has some extra feature like region free and VGA output.

  4. You might try this forum. I think the Oppo is a hot player. Not sure about it's DivX performance.
