  1. Is there an industry standard which is used for testing compression quality - something similar to what the tests bars are to analogue TVs?

  2. There isn't a common trustworthy measurement of quality, so an industry standard to test for something like visual quality is kind of problematic.
    There are a bunch of short test sources people like to use for codec evaluations like: http://media.xiph.org/video/derf/

  3. The "bird" sample from Planet Earth is often used as a such a stress test.

    Anything with lots of film grain is also very difficult. Especially in dark areas.

    Ask the BBC. The Blu-ray disc is probably the best you're going to find otherwise. The sample that post was probably re-encoded from the Blu-ray release.
