  1. So.. I bought this firewire card:

    https://www.startech.com/Cards-Adapters/FireWire/4-Port-IEEE-1394-FireWire-PCI-Card~PCI1394MP

To capture some old miniDV tapes I have. The card shows up in device manager so all seems to fine there.

I'm using WinDV to "try" to capture the video. I had a hard time getting the PC to pick up my video camera, I had to keep unplugging and re-plugging in the 4pin end to the camera until eventually WinDV recognized it and this is what I get when I try to capture..

Any guesses what the cause is?

Faulty firewire port on the camera?

playback errors in the cam. you could try cleaning the heads. easiest way is with a tape cleaner. if that doesn't work the tape may have been recorded in a different cam and there an alignment mismatch.

You may have the wrong driver (need legacy driver)...

The third possibility since you had a hard time with the PC recognizing the camcorder could be dirty/worn out connectors or bad firewire cable.

  5. I forgot to mention that the tapes play fine on the camcorder display.

Do you still think this is the issue?

Same issue with the legacy driver, thanks for the suggestion though.

Yeah, i'm starting to think it's the port on the cam. I'll buy another firewire cable and see if it works.

Get a wooden tooth pick and try to clean the ports of the computer and camcorder, try not to scrub hard or you will break the connectors.

Turns out I didn't install the legacy driver correctly. I've done it right now and in WinDV i'm now getting "Error: Can't find DV output pin"

I bought a new cable and that didn't fix anything.

"...Output pin..." refers to Directshow filter connections. If it cannot find that, something is still not installed properly, or you have something else that is installed which is conflicting with it.

  10. I gave up and bought a camcorder from ebay and it works perfectly on the latest drivers. Looks like the port on my camera was busted.
    Thanks for the help everyone.
