  1. Right now I use MKVExtractGIU to extract subs from mkv containers.
Then use an avisynth script to open the mkv in virtualdub.
After that I use the videofilters in virtualdub: resize and textsub
also go to audio full compression and choose lamemp3 compression
and for videocompression I use xvid.

Got the necessary programs installed of course like xvid and VSfilter.

Is there a way to batch convert mkv to avi with all the above implemented?

I tried to look some stuff up on batch files but don't really understand the process.

The reason I convert is so that can watch it on my dvd player.

    Kind regards,

P.s. on a sidenote, I just bought a ps3 and was wondering whats the best way to add subs with mkv to mp4. I read that the ps3 doesn't support separate subfiles. use yampmp4 to embed srt into the mp4?

Any way for the ps3 to support .ass subfiles or is the only option reencoding to h264 with hardcoded subs?

I think Format factory can do batch and burn in subs.

  3. Does Format factory allow for special typesetting and color of the subs? I tried it out and doesn't seem use the styling of the .ass sub file.
Also with burn in subs you mean hardcode when it reencodes the video or is it able to do it without reencoding?

If you are happy with plain subs then they can be embedded without re-encoding, although not all players will recognise them. If you want hard subs with specific colours or type-setting then you have to re-encode.

  5. I'll try Format Factory for hardsubbed files.
What program do I use to put H264/X264 in an avi container? I know it's better to put those files in mp4 container but the ps3 doesn't recognises subs when using mp4. Dattebayo did this when subbing Bleach.

Can I simply open the h264 file in virtualdub through avisynth script and then save as avi?

avisynth frameserves uncompressed video, so virtualdub will see it fine. If avisynth can open it, virtualdub can play with it.
