    Hi
    Cant get 5.1 sound output when i play mkv / x264 files eg. moviv encoded with 5.1 have tryed MPC WMP VLC Power dvd Vista Media Center no 5.1 sound with this type of file but if i play a dvd i get 5.1 sound using thes players i use spdif for hookup to my reciever .

    Do i need a special codec to get 5.1 sound with those files

    I use ac3filter, haali media splitter and mpc to play mkv with 5.1 ac3 through spdif and it works great.

    If you use ac3filter, check the configurations if you have the right output selected
