poisondeathray, My HV30 is a Mini DV tape recording camera.
aedipuss, I usually use the capture portion of Vegas. But I will try the hdvsplit you mentioned. One grip I have in Vegas capturing is, there is no time/date code on the file. So I have no idea out of 30 tapes when they where recorded. Does this HDVsplit record any of this info on the files?Last edited by liberty610; 21st Jun 2012 at 17:05.

It's still digital data, but stored on analog tape.
Firewire + HDVSplit will get you bit for bit identical transfer . All the "1's and 0's" are the same on the tape as there are when in the .m2t on your computer
If you use the Hauppauge, you incur generation loss - it will re-encode the video to AVCHD -
yes date/time is part of the file name. there are options as to how.

Wow, again, thank you very much!
One last thing, and I should be good to go for a while! And again, thank you for all the help!
This bluray I am attempting to record... it's a small production for my family. We have a lot of footage (from the DVDs I've been trying to rip) that of course where all SD footage. I plan on doing some on camera introductions for sections of the disc. There is a LOT of footage, and I plan on splitting the project up into volumes.
The bulk of the footage is SD, with the only HD footage I am going to have is anything shot on my HV30. There are some videos from the HV30 I plan on using, but not nearly as much as the SD footage.
With bluray, if I where to keep everything in the HD format for disc burning, is there any approximate hours the disc will hold of video? If I am rendering a mix of HD and SD files together, I'd be using Sony Vegas' templates for Bluray rendering.
Or, would it be more benefical to fit more on one disc if I captured the Hv30 in DV LOck mode and downgrade the HD fotage to a higher quaity SD and fit more video on one blu ray?
Forgive me, I have yet to work much with the bluray format. DOn't know much about it yet. -
It's analgous to DVD. You have a fixed capacity just like DVD5 or DVD9 e.g. BD25 will fit about 25GB, BD50 will fit about 50GB
Filesize = bitrate x running time
There are online bitrate calculators, but the transport stream adds anywhere from 4-8% overhead, so make sure you use a proper "blu ray" bitrate calculator
For HD, you will need higher bitrates to maintain a certain level of quality than SD. Black bars , letterbox, pillarbox, - they don't take up much bitrate if they are clean (pure black, no noise) . So even if you have SD footage in a HD frame, the difference in bitrate you would use is minimal over SD, maybe a few % difference for the same level of "quality"
The other option is to upscale the SD footage to HD. (I probably wouldn't do this since the majority is SD)
Or if you only have a tiny bit HD, you can downscale that (and make a SD blu-ray) . If you were downscaling the HDV (and certain you're not using it for any other HD purposes), I would capture it a DV instead of doing a software downscale
You can actually have SD and HD on the same blu-ray , but they have to be in different titles -

I would like to do an all SD project on this so I can fit as much footage on one disc as possible, as I only have the 25gig single layer discs at this time.
