I prefer to watch anamorphic DVD's on my 4:3 in letterbox mode (preserves the director's intention). Thus for anamorphically enhanced movies I set my DVD player (Skyworth) to process the anamorphic image (drop lines presumably) to output either a 16:9 or 2.25:1 letterbox image.
When trying to convert such DVD's to SVCD using TMPGENc I have found no settings available under the SuperVCD template outputs the right AR film - the best I can get is a 16:9 horizontally squished image.
So I played around with the unlock template and found by changing the output format from center (preserve aspect ratio) to center (custom image size) and setting the image size to 720x390 (not much difference between 380-400) I can output a proper AR letterbox image. Movies this has worked on are Legally Blonde and Exit Wounds. I presume if the movie was 16:9 originally and squeezed my settings would be different.
Just wondering what other folks in this forum are doing and their experiences
Thanks
Larry

I frameserve with DVD2avi my rip, after "cropping" the black borders. Then to tmpeg I set the source to 2.11.1 and the output to 4:3
In case the dvd rip is already to 2.11.1 but anamorphic, then I don't crop a thing
The encoding creates 2.11.1 movie
If I set 16:9 the output, then I have 2.21.1 ...
Try with tmpgenc preview fuction, to see what the result can be

I didn't notice the cropping option in DVD2AVI before but how can you preview how your clipping is going to work?
So if you have a 2.21:1 anamorphically enhanced movie, to get a letterbox image on a TV, what do you do exactly?
Crop the image in DVD2AVI and then what settings in TMP?
Thanks
