One of my favourite films, The Day After has been released on Bluray, unfortunately its Region A locked, I live in Region B UK. Would it be possible to rip this disc and play it back on my media server or memory stick plugged into my TV ?

yes, you would need to use a program like dvdfab to remove the copy protection & region lock.
after that, the movie should play on your media server or memory stick.

MakeMKV, which I think is still free, can create an MKV from a Blu-ray disc as well as output files and folders.

MakeMKV is the simpler option. It's free for as long as you update the rego number every ? months. I have quite a few Zone A discs from my US travels and have transferred them all on to my NAS as MKV files.

^ It's every 2 months that you need to update MakeMKV registration.
