    1) My DVD writer (Sony Dw-U18) failed recognizing DVDs (please insert Disc; no Disc etc);
    I suspected now that it was due to my trying to make it Region Free.

    2) Then I tried to flush it and UPGRADE its firmware etc;
    still it won't recognize DVDs (please insert Disc; no Disc etc)

    3) After the last try to revert it back to the original firmware, programming Crashed?
    and since, no program including the Windows Explorer SEEING (Recognizing) it at all (D drive).

    It even does not get POWER to open the tray?

    4) Can I get it back? How ?

    *** Windows Media Edition 2002 (2004?)

    *** DVD was Sony DW-u18 USy3 ;
    after my fooling around with firmwares, it was reported to be DRU-700A (812S)

    you probably killed the drive flashing it. buy a new one and do some research before you buy one. get a liteon drive which has region free hacks that can be used.
