I have been playing mp3's on a hdd with my media player for years. (Argosy Media Player) It was an old IDE 2.½" hdd via usb, & it finally died. These old drives I used draw very low power (0.4 - 0.6 ma.) Anyway, I thought I would try using a 'thumb'. I have a few name brand thumbs and some 30 & 60 gig ssd's. Could use one of them.
As I understand things, its the writing data to them that 'wears' them out. How long could I expext any of them to last??

Brands = Patriot, PNY, etc. purchased from 'Frys Electronics' store. (one 'KingDion' 1.8" 32 gig ssd, from Newegg)

They do work ok, video's too, but for how long??

edit = all my prefered music easily fits on 32 gigs of memory

  2. Decent flash memory easily lasts 100,000 write/erase cycles now. I wouldn't worry about it in your usage scenario (mostly reads). I use USB thumb drives for music in the car. You always want to have backups though.

The answer I wanted to hear!

Ripped music from 100's of CD's, LP's extracted from DVD's, even some from VHS, definitely backed up in several locations.
