  1. There is a BBC News article this morning reporting on a new compression standard that will mean that 4K video will be able to be shown with half the bandwidth that it currently needs. It also can be applied to current HD video and it was stated it require half the bandwidth it needs now. Here is a link:

They have a booth (Hitachi booth (SL3910)) at the NAB show so anyone who is there could take a look/have a talk and report back to us.

My bet is that it is based on some 'oh-we-don't-really-notice-those-artifacts' because 'psychology' kind of compression. Then after you watch 100+ movies those 'invisible' artifacts will be 'discovered' and will never more go unnoticed.

  4. It was News to me. I have been rooting for some new compression standard. Fiber Optic is not coming to our area. DSL is our best option at the moment. So if this was to pan out it would mean a lot to all those little rural areas that don't merit the investment in fiber optic. Streaming Video is here and Netflix and other such services eat up bandwidth. Of course it may not pan out; but for the moment I am hopeful.

  5. "V-Nova says it can deliver the same quality picture using just 7-8Mbps" That from the article link in post #1.

That's still won't work for our DSL here. I only get 1.2Mbps.

VP9 is showing promise at very low bitrates.

P.S. I would be very Leary with these newly introduced codecs. The vast majority won't even see the light of day in the real world. Without support, there is no hope.
