I don't understand XGA HDTVs, that is, HDTVs with resolutions of 1024x768. This is clearly a 4:3 aspect ratio, so how can there be numerous widescreen HDTV's at this resolution? I'm assuming the horizontal pixels are just wider than the vertical ones, so basically, it's a 4:3 picture stretched to fit a widescreen?
But wouldn't this result in a much lower picture quality?
I'm asking this because there is a standard 1366x768 lcd, and a 1024x768 plasma that are both going on sale at Future Shop on boxing day. The plasm with the lower resolution is 200 dollars cheaper. What's the difference in picture quality between the two?
Thanks,
Tony

Wait, so what your saying ED, is that...
1024x768 which I can set as default on my Desktop. This is a Magnavox 27" LCD by the way... When I get my HDTV tuner card, full screen at that resolution will be 720p?Project Digital: Eliminate All Physical Media is finally underway! -

The 1366x768 LCD will need the display card set for wide screen desktop at 1366x768. Then a 4:3 SD tuner playback will show as a 4:3 rectangle on the 16:9 desktop.
If your Magnavox is set for a 1366x768 wide desktop, 720p from a HD tuner will show as a 1280x720 16:9 window on a 1366x768 desktop. "Full Screen" will upscale 1280x720 to 1366x768. -

welcome to progressive video.
"Full screen" will match the desktop resolution so 1280x768 with black letterbox.Recommends: Kiva.org - Loans that change lives.

Ed,

Are you feeding it by VGA? Then try 1024x768. Each pixel will display 4:3 aspect ratio (e.g. wide). The TV manual should list accepted VGA resolutions.
Or feed it 16:9 1280x720p square pixel. The display will scale that to 1024x768 but it should still be 16:9.Recommends: Kiva.org - Loans that change lives.

I made some 16x9 clips for a projector which was 1024x768, and IIRC the dimensions I encoded to was 1024x576.
